Self-styled Polish prince second from last in London mayor election

A self-styled Polish prince who ran as an independent candidate in London’s mayoral election won just 0.5% of the vote to finish second from last.

London-born businessman Jan Żyliński, best known for challenging Nigel Farage, leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP) to a duel last year, secured 13,202 first-preference votes in the first round of the election on Thursday. He finished 11th, behind a candidate standing for the Cannabis is Safer than Alcohol group.

Żyliński had declared ahead of the election that he was running for mayor of London “to provide a strong voice to the Polish community, because I believe that they do not get the credit they deserve for the significant contribution they make to this great city.” The election was won by Labour Party candidate Sadiq Khan, the son of Pakistani immigrants, who became London’s first Muslim mayor.
