Polish apple sales rising

A campaign encouraging Poles to buy locally-produced apples is continuing to prosper two months after it was launched to help counteract Russia’s import ban.

“Initial assumptions show that compared to sales in the corresponding period last year, there has been a growth of apple sales by between 20-100 percent,” a representative of the Polish Organization of Trade and Distribution (POHiD) told the Rzeczpospolita daily.

POHiD’s “Jem bo polskie” campaign (“I eat it, because is Polish”), aims to promote higher consumption of both fruit and vegetables, although the main emphasis has been on apples.

Poland is the EU’s biggest apple producer, with volumes reaching 2.9 million tonnes annually.

In the 2012/2013 season, Polish exports of the fruit stood at 456 million euro.

POHiD is counting on increasing total apple sales in Poland by 90,000 tonnes in the course of the program.

The campaign is scheduled to run until the end of the year, but the organisation is considering a possible extension.
